All the good boys and girls at Best Friends Animal Society’s Dogtown received a special surprise this week from the jolly man in the red suit – Santa.

Christmas in July (July 24th & 25th) started in 1933 at a summer camp in North Carolina and is now a great reason to spoil homeless dogs while they wait for a forever home.

“On any given day, nearly 400 dogs and puppies wake up here at Dogtown, a multiple-building community created to provide the love, care, rehabilitation, and companionship needed to prepare them for adoption,” states Best Friends.

Many have had a rough start in life and are healing in some form, so they deserve extra attention and toys.

Best Friends Animal Society posted, “Typically Santa only comes on Christmas morning, but he couldn’t resist bringing them toys and treats twice this year. Here are just some of the dogs picking out their favorite toy or treat from Santa’s sleigh!”

The entire area was decorated with red and green tinsel and an inflatable Santa in shorts was displayed in front of the building. Staff and volunteers dressed up in their best tropical Christmas attire and wore red flower leis to get in the holiday spirit.

Loads of toys were brought to Dogtown and one by one the dogs were able to dig through and find the perfect one. There was endless tail wagging, and both the dogs and staff couldn’t stop smiling.

Photos were shared on Instagram of the happy dogs. A Rottweiler named Carl picked a stuffed bunny to play with as he waits for a loving home. He takes a bit to warm up to new people but once he does, he is such a sweetheart. If you are looking for a couch potato who enjoys slow walks, Carl is your guy.

In addition to the extra toys, the shelter dogs receive daily walks and enrichments like swimming pools filled with balls. It is a slice of heaven on earth for dogs.

Shy dogs come out of their shell and energetic pups can run and play at the dog park.

People are encouraged to visit and meet the dogs. There are several ways to help from volunteering to sponsoring to adopting.
